150th Anniversary
Celebrating 150 Years as America's First Animal Shelter, 1869-2019
On April 14, 1869, Women’s Animal Center was established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as America’s First Animal Shelter. Accordingly, this date in 2019 will not only mark our origins, but the 150th Anniversary of animal sheltering and adoptions in the United States, offering the chance for pet lovers near and far to reflect upon the billions of lives that have been saved across the nation since our inception.
We know that the past 150 years would not have been possible without so many compassionate generations of partners, advocates, adopters and animal lovers. Key among them is The Laurels Pet Center, located on the beautiful grounds of West Laurel Hill Cemetery. Like Women's Animal Center, West Laurel Hill has been faithfully serving the families of our region since 1869, and so too are marking their 150th year of operations!
Our organizations share distinct yet equally significant nonprofit missions of service to both people and pets. Together, we are dedicated to celebrating the special bond between our two-and-four-legged families – a bond that we recognize does not end with death. In addition to being our valued partner, The Laurels Pet Center is dedicated to giving back by helping animals in need, including those in our shelter. Learn more about their amazing work, and the services and resources they can provide you and your family.
Women's Animal Center gratefully acknowledges our 150th Anniversary Media Partner:
Last fall, Women's Animal Center was one of just six animal shelters across the country selected to participate in Cat Pawsitive Pro, a program of GreaterGood developed by the Cat Daddy himself, Mr. Jackson Galaxy. We are honored by Jackson's good wishes during our 150th year, and for all he does to support the lifesaving work of shelters like ours.
