Service Learning
Service learning is a teaching method that combines learning goals and community service in ways that can enhance both student growth and the common good. It integrates community service with instruction to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and ultimately strengthen communities.
At Women's Animal Center, service learning empowers students young and old to become involved as active participants in supporting our shelter and bettering the lives of our homeless animals. Education is at the core of our mission, and we often find experience to be the best teacher in revealing to learners that one small act of kindness can make a world of difference.
Our service learning projects inspire students who care about animal welfare to work with their peers on developing and implementing independent projects from their own homes or schools that support our cause through direct and tangible results. Common projects include:
- Crafting enrichment toys for our shelter animals
- Persuasive writing, “adopt me” poems, or portraits of adoptable animals to that help to promote their adoption
- Managing collection drives that raise vital funding and supplies for our shelter
These hands-on activities are teaching even our youngest of students the value of individual responsibility as well as teamwork, and reinforcing the power of kindness in action. If you are interested in doing a service learning project with your group, select one of the following activities, and then reach out to our community programs coordinator at: education@womensanimalcenter.org to discuss your project's organization and timeline.
